The Runner’s High

|

|
The proof is in the pudding…well, more specifically, in the neuroscience. In Gina Kolata’s Personal Best column in today’s New York Times, she reports that there is now scientific evidence that, “Running does elicit a flood of endorphins in the brain.”
Using PET scans and chemicals to reveal endorphins in the brain, runners’ brains were analyzed both before and after a 2-hour run. The “euphoric” effect of long runs was given scientific credence.
However, you don’t necessarily have to be running to create the “runner’s high.” Intense endurance exercise of any variety, such as biking and swimming, can produce elevated moods as well. In the Sports Center’s CP Throttle triathlon training program, early morning endurance swimming, running and biking provides not only unparalleled camaraderie in a team training environment, but a healthy dose of pre-work euphoria.

The Road to Beijing

Shane Palahicky, Chelsea Piers BlueStreak Director of Programming

|
Most of us can’t imagine running as fast as Bernard Lagat, the 2007 World Outdoor Champion in the 1,500 and 5,000-meter distances who has twice stood on the Olympic podium. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, 12 hundredths of a second separated him from the gold.
At BlueStreak, we understand that a tenth of a second, an eighth of an inch or an additional burst of energy can make the difference between finishing first, winning the game or even making the final cut for the team. And, while the outcome for most of us isn’t played out on the Olympic stage, it doesn’t make the struggle and the determination any less important.
Four years later with four more years of experience behind him, Lagat will give his dream of Olympic gold another chance at fulfillment in Beijing. When’s your Beijing? Are you ready for it? At Chelsea Piers BlueStreak, we’ll show you how to take your sport to the next level.
Click here to read "A Runner Dreams of Gold Under a New Flag" from The New York Times, the first in a series that will follow Lagat on the road to Beijing.

Running hats are certainly fashionable within the road running community. And, with their sweat-wicking and glare-reducing qualities, they are also extremely functional. For The New York Times’ Fashion & Style Gear Test today, Brad O’Brien, the president of the Tamalpa Runners in Marin County, California, tested (and reviewed) five hats during his training and racing.
Chelsea Piers sponsor adidas came out on top with the adidas Supernova Cap as O’Brien’s favorite. Click here to check out the review and get more details.

Want to put a little science behind your New Year’s resolution? Join the Chelsea Piers BlueStreak Calorie Burnoff!
Use a heartrate monitor to track your calories burned and record them at the end of each BlueStreak session. And, interval training burns more calories than training at a consistent pace for the same duration of time, so you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the results.
As an added incentive, male and female athletes who burn the most calories will win two (2) Chelsea Piers Gold Passports ($220 value) and sport-specific prizes at the end of the competition. Better yet, if all athletes in the competition meet a cumulative calorie goal, everyone will receive a free training session.
The contest runs from January 14th through March 15th.
Heart rate monitors are available for purchase at the BlueStreak front desk.
*Must be at least 21 years of age to participate.

Even as adults, we can all take a lesson from the determination of the Little Engine That Could. With his mantra, “I think I can, I think I can,” he accomplished a feat greater than anyone could have imagined. In yesterday’s New York Times, Gina Kolata explains that, “since most people can do better, no matter how good their performance, the challenge is to find a safe way to push a little harder,” to turn that “pseudo-maximum” performance into a “maximum” performance.
The trick? Dissociation.
In Kolata’s article, I'm Not Really Running, I'm Not Really Running..., find out how to use your mind to push the envelope in your next competition.

Happy Birthday Basketball

Shane Palahicky, BlueStreak Program Director
11/28/07
|
|
|

|
According to Chase’s Calendar of Events, basketball, as we know it today, was created on December 1, 1891. Gym teacher James Naismith at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, created the sport. Designing a sport that could be played during the winter months, he nailed peach baskets to opposite ends of the gym and distributed soccer balls for his students to throw into them.
Quite a few advances have been made since this fledgling form of the sport began 116 years ago. And, with the competition out there today, athletes need to hone their skills and train smarter than ever before. Chelsea Piers BlueStreak, making use of the most scientifically advanced training protocols, provides the training to take your basketball game to the next level.

Team Building Hits Home for the Holidays

Just in time for the holiday season and extended family gatherings, the Field House at Chelsea Piers is offering Family Time, a new twist on the popular corporate team-building program.
Family Time will feature games such as the Blind Trust Walk, designed to encourage family bonding. In Blind Trust Walk, one person must lead a blindfolded family member through an obstacle course, but mum’s the word! Silence is golden as family members develop creative ways to communicate with each other.
If the trek to Grandma’s doesn’t take you over the river and through the woods, make plans for a trip over the highway and through the Piers. Fun-filled Family Time awaits!
*Family groups must have at least eight participants; children can be as young as seven years old. Family Time is available as either a two-hour or a three-hour session. Each class is custom-designed for your family’s desired activity level.

Gina Kolata’s article, Low Buzz May Give Mice Better Bones and Less Fat, in today’s New York Times, provides an interesting analysis of a treatment that appears to “be directing cells to turn into bone instead of fat.”
While concrete information regarding the relationship between vibrations and bone density in humans is not yet available, at the very least you’ll take away a few interesting factoids. For example, professional tennis players have 35% more bone in their playing arm.

An article in this week’s New York Times, "Keeping Up With the Pack", by Gina Kolata extols the benefits of group runs. Though you might think your iPod is the best company around, you’ll be surprised by how motivating it can be to run with others. A great side effect is that you’ll likely get faster, too! And, according to Kolata, “you may become unexpectedly close to people you would never have met or gotten to know in your other life.”
Sounds like fun, right?
Stop by the adidas Urban Run office for free group runs on Tuesday evenings at 7pm and Sunday mornings at 10am. The office is located at Pier 62, next to Ruthy’s Café.

While you make plans for Labor Day barbecues and beach parties, make sure you’ve planned to protect your skin, too. Sunscreens provide an essential first line of defense; however, studies show that they only block up to 55 percent of free radicals. SkinCeuticals has developed topical antioxidants and broad-spectrum sunscreens that work together to neutralize free radicals and protect against UV-induced damage.
Now through August 31, a portion of all SkinCeuticals sunscreen sales at the Spa at Chelsea Piers will be donated to The Skin Cancer Foundation towards melanoma awareness education. Stop by and make an investment in your skin’s future. Email feedback |

Thanks to our childhood antics, teenage upheavals and adult adversities, we’ve tested the so-called joys of motherhood to their limits. Once a year, on Mother's Day, we futilely try to undo all those early years of angst with a card and a bouquet of flowers. Remember that baseball you hit through the neighbor’s window, or that time you tried to give the German shepherd a bath in the kitchen sink? It’s time to treat your mom to more than the traditional card and flowers. Give her the gift of some much-deserved relaxation at the Spa at Chelsea Piers and you’ll receive a complimentary gift card for yourself.
Until May 13, 2007, purchase a $150.00 (or more) gift card for your mother and receive a complimentary $30 gift card.

adidas Urban Run is better than ever. In fact, New York Magazine highlighted the adidas Urban Run in its prestigious March Best Of issue. Runners now meet in a newly redesigned office providing yoga mats with ample space to stretch, cubbies to store belongings while you’re out running, information on upcoming races, as well as drinks, nutrition bars and bananas to refuel after the run.
Accomplished Sports Center instructors lead the runs. Class meets Tuesday evenings at 7pm and Sunday mornings at 10am at the Urban Run office, located on Pier 62 next to Ruthy’s Café.

The boys’ level 8 team and girls’ levels 4, 6, 7 & 8 teams all brought home the gold. The level 4 boys’ team and level 5 girls’ team also did well winning silver medals. Some inspiring performances by our boys’ level 10 team resulted in a well-deserved 3rd place medal.

Holiday campers at the Field House at Chelsea Piers were treated to a unique show by a quintet of animals rarely seen in Manhattan. Thanks to Animal Ambassadors from SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Adventure Camps, a 6-foot alligator, a hawk, mellow yellow the python, and a juvenile kangaroo complete with its very own pouch were on site to regale the campers. The acclaimed lemur, whose rise to fame came from his rather animated performance in the film, Madagascar, also was on-hand to wow the campers. Thanks again to SeaWorld and Busch Gardens for providing us with such a wonderful treat! Email feedback |

If you’re like most Americans, you greeted the new year with your eye on the tiger and some chic new workout clothes. You donned an I-pod, ran out of the house and reveled in the camaraderie of others starting the new year off right. Maybe you even watched Rocky XI on the sly.
The Chelsea Piers Fitness Solution will help you build on that sometimes short-lived spurt of zeal that comes after holiday feasting and New Year’s resolutions.
The premise of The Chelsea Piers Fitness Solution is that health and fitness can be fun if you find a sport you love and a community of fellow enthusiasts who share your passion. A fitness personality quiz in the beginning of the book helps the readers determine what sports best match their personalities. The book profiles 27 different sports – most of which are available at Chelsea Piers – and provides everything you need to know to get started and succeed.
According to the well-respected Kirkus Review, The Chelsea Piers Fitness Solution is “A fitness book with a simple premise: Exercise should be fun…Readers will appreciate the personal stories of initially-apprehensive participants who have come to embrace their new sport. General fitness tips and an "eating like an athlete" section will help support your new lifestyle.” The Library Journal also gave a nice review noting, “Fitness Expert Rover has crafted a refreshing book that approaches exercise as a lifelong pursuit for enjoyment; fitness is the by-product…. As a result, this volume is recommended for all public libraries.”
Are you ready to revolutionize the way you think about exercise?
