Over the past 20 years, Derek has designed and developed a very practical, progressive and successful way of teaching the skills of baseball and softball to children aged 18 months and up. His cutting edge educational and motivational concepts are highly touted. The youth baseball league “Gerry Ball” that he created in now seen as the benchmark in instructional baseball leagues for players aged 4 to 7 years old. His Spring and Fall Leagues for 8 to 15 year olds are so popular that there are a few hundred players on the waiting list!
Derek’s curriculum and training methodologies are featured in training centers and youth baseball programs across America, Canada and Europe. Derek has also been featured as a guest speaker, clinician and coach for baseball programs in 7 countries.
His comprehensive approach to the designing of programs and curriculums has made The Baseball Center NYC the training facility of choice of Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation as well as the Jorge Posada Foundation. In conjunction with Turn 2 and with the New York City Parks Department, Mr. Aucoin has designed and coordinated the 6 week summer baseball program for over 1,500 participants in all five boroughs. Derek also designs and coordinates baseball camps for Steiner Sports Marketing featuring current Yankee, Mets and Red-Sox players. Over the past few years, Derek’s camps and clinics have included some of the best players in baseball as well as some Hall of Fame players. Some of these players are Derek Jeter, Tino Martinez, David Ortiz, Carlos Delgado, Mariano Rivera, Ron Guidry and Jorge Posada just to name a few.
Derek has also been involved in organizing fundraisers for many foundations and since 2001 has helped raise over $950,000 for the likes of the Mario Lemieux foundation, The Pat Tillman Foundation, Helping Hands, The Phoenix House, The Robin Hood Foundation, The Jorge Posada Foundation and the Derek Jeter Foundation. In 2004, as special consultant of “La Caravane McDonald”, Derek worked closely with National Hockey League player Joel Bouchard in setting up a 16 city charity hockey tournament featuring teams comprised of National League Hockey players. During the NHL lockout, La Caravane McDonald raised over $700,000 for the Ronald McDonald house of Quebec, cancer research as well as Quebec’s amateur hockey association.
A highly in-demand baseball and sports “consultant”, Mr. Aucoin has been retained by many television and movie projects as a baseball and sports expert. Derek worked with Director Spike Lee on a mini-series called “Miracle’s Boys” as well as with ESPN on a few segments for the 2006 Espy’s. Derek has been featured as the youth baseball expert on many networks including CNN, CBS and NBC. He continues to consult and collaborate on many television and radio programs that need his expertise.
Prior to opening The Baseball Center NYC in July of 2000, Derek was a member of the 1988 Canadian Junior Olympic Baseball team and then went on to play professional baseball for 10 seasons with the Montreal Expos and New York Mets. He retired from playing in 1999 and has relentlessly continued to master his craft in order to impact the largest amount of players possible.
