Chelsea Piers has launched a complex-wide green initiative, which includes the purchase of green power, the establishment of an on-site recycling program and making an investment in energy-saving infrastructure improvements. Effective October 1, Chelsea Piers began purchasing 100% green wind power equal to its annual projected electricity usage. This purchase will offset over 13,344 metric tons of electricity-related greenhouse gas emissions, an annual amount equal to taking 2,856 cars off the road.
One of the key components of the Chelsea Piers green initiative is a grassroots employee support program. More than 40 employees are volunteering their time to “Green Teams” at each sports venue and analyzing their business with a goal to “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Reeducate.”
Our green journey is a process – we will not be perfect on Day 1. Our goal is to establish a path for constant improvement. We are excited to be taking this first important step.
John Boyd, Group Fitness Director October 30, 2008
On Monday, November 10th at 7:00pm, instructors, trainers, members and friends of the Sports Center are taking their skills and strutting them in a one-hour dance recital for a good cause. As Chelsea Piers joins the green movement and commits to ecological best practices, the chosen recipient of proceeds from the Sports Center’s third Dance Benefit is MillionTreesNYC, a city-wide initiative to plant and care for one million trees in NYC's five boroughs by the year 2017.
There is a suggested audience donation of $20/person and 100% of the proceeds go to MillionTreesNYC. The event will take place at the Sports Center at Chelsea Piers, Pier 60, Studio A.

Fifty-two year-old Barbara Buchan stood proudly atop the medal podium in Beijing after breaking the world record and winning the gold medal for her disability class in the Paralympics individual 3,000-meter cycling pursuit. After a serious accident in 1982 during a cycling competition left her missing one-quarter of her left-temporal brain and suffering significant physical and cognitive problems, Barbara was determined to get back on the bike.
