The New York Times recently swung by Chelsea Piers to interview Sky Rink Director of Skating School Wade Corbett about his experience at Sky Rink.

The 64-year-old first laced up a pair of skates at the original Sky Rink in midtown when he was 25 years old (and he experienced quite a fall!). Now, Corbett runs a program for aspiring skaters "age 3 until death," he says. The youngest skaters in the Sky Rink Skating School are merely 3 years old, while Corbett's oldest pupil is 64.

Corbett also spends a great deal of time on the ice in the summer, as he helps run the Ice Skating program in the Chelsea Piers Summer Sports Camps.  Click here to read the full feature in the New York Times, and to learn more about Wade Corbett.

Today the quest begins for many great skaters in the U.S. as they compete in the US Figure Skating Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. For the past few days, skaters at the Novice and Junior level have been battling for the podium. Now, it is time for the Senior level skaters to take the ice. Several of Sky Rink's own skaters are competing in the tournament--Felicia Zhang in Senior ladies; Felicia and her partner, Taylor Toth, in Senior Pairs; and Lloyd Ting, making his National debut in Senior Men's.

TV coverage on NBC begins at 3PM on Saturday, January 29. Coverage also airs on UniveralSports (an NBC affiliate) through Sunday night, so be sure to check your local listings!

Ironically, the European Championships from Bern, Switzerland occur simultaneously with the US Figure Skating Championships.  Although this competition does not include North American skaters, the skating world should watch closely to see emerging starts from top figure skating nations such as France, Russia, Germany and Finland.  New faces always appear after an Olympic year, changing the game for everyone.

There is no question of whether or not the popularity of the NHL is on the rise. Years ago, the NHL developed exciting programs to engage fans even further in the sport - the annual outdoor Winter Classic and Hockey Weekend Across America. On February 20 the NHL and NBC join forces to launch their six-hour broadcast as part of the fourth-annual Hockey Weekend Across America. Who will commentate and where it will take place is yet to be determined, but what teams will be competing has already been released. The New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins are all scheduled to compete. Grab a front row seat on your couch, a barstool or set your DVR. How you watch is up to you, just be sure to wake up early and get ready for some hockey!

If all this hockey talk makes you want to get on the ice, visit Sky Rink anytime to enroll in adult hockey prep, youth hockey or join us for General Skating sessions six days per week!
