The Sports Center congratulates 36-year-old Jack Chen on completing his first Ironman competition in Florida this past weekend. He completed a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and topped it all off with a 26.2-mile run.

Jack Chen, blind since the age of 16, has competed in many marathons and triathlons, but this was the longest and hardest race he has attempted. Jack has spent hours in the Sports Center pool training for the swim portion of the race.

“The conditions were tough – the current was pretty strong, and there was a headwind for a solid 1/3 of the bike at least,” Jack says. “The temperature at the start of the swim was 42 degrees and 48 degrees when the bike leg began. In a word, it was cold!”

Jack is only the 13th blind person to ever complete an Ironman race. Congratulations to Jack on finishing with a time of 13:45:32.

The Sports Center Becomes First USA Triathlon Certified Training Center in the Northeast

Greta Wagner, Sports Center General Manager

The Sports Center has been certified as a USA Triathlon Certified Training Center, one of only five in the United States and the only one in the Northeast region.

This important certification was achieved by reaching a number of standards set forth by USA Triathlon.  Certified Training Centers must provide USAT-certified coaches, Dartfish technology, bike fitting capabilities, VO2 and Lactate testing, among other requirements. Additionally, facilities must have a minimum of a 25-yard pool and provide discounts to all USA Triathlon members.

Because the Sports Center is the only club in New York located within a state park and on a bikeway, it can service the triathlon community better than any facility in NYC. If you're interested in triathlon training, the Sports Center offers programs appropriate for all levels of athletes - from beginners to seasoned triathletes.
