The 2010 Ryder Cup pits the best players from the Unites States versus those of Europe, begins this week, October 1 through 3, at The Celtic Manor Resort in Newport Wales.

Players compete in a variety of match play formats. For many years, the US team was the presumed winner, but in the recent past, Europe has fielded many strong squads. Now, the matches are extremely competitive. This year, the European team is, on paper, the favorite.

Pick the winners and you can win! To celebrate this great event the Golf Club is holding a contest. Answer 2 questions:

(1) Which side will win? US or Europe?

(2) Which player will have the most points?

Guess correctly and win a Cleveland CG 15 Sand Wedge and a $50 Ball Card. Please post answers here or on the Golf Club Facebook page. Good luck!

Congratulations to Cheikh Fall for posting the high score at the NYC Under Armour Combine!

The combine, which was held at the Sports Center on September 27, tested nearly 100 elite high school athletes on several different components, including athleticism, movement and character in order to create a "C360" score, the global measurement standard for improved sports performance, health and fitness.

The 6-foot-7, 157-pound junior from the Bronx School of Business had the top score amid a field of nearly 100 athletes, with a score of 220. Way to go, Cheikh!

In an experiment published last month, researchers at the University of Indiana set out to learn more about how fitness affects the immature brain.

Through a combination of two separate studies, researchers recruited 9 and 10 year old schoolchildren and had them run on a treadmill. After running, the children were sorted into categories based on the results of their treadmill run. The groups then completed a series of cognitive challenges in one study and a series of complex memory challenges in the other study. After testing, the children’s brains were scanned to measure the physical volume of specific areas of their brain.

In general, fitter children scored better on the tests. Furthermore, however, the portion of the brain exercised in each intellectual challenge proved to be larger in fit children. After the series of cognitive challenges, the brain scan images revealed that fit children had significantly larger basal ganglia, a key part of the brain that aids in maintaining attention and the ability to coordinate actions and thoughts. Also, after the series of complex memory challenges, fit children had an increase in the size of their hippocampi, the portion of the brain associated with complex memory activity.

The takeaway is clear--kids need more aerobic exercise. So get your kids moving!

New Study Reveals Biological Benefits of Massage

Think a good massage can do more than just relax your muscles? Researchers at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles do. After a study in which 53 healthy adults underwent varying degrees of massage, researchers discovered that a single massage session resulted in positive biological changes.

Volunteers who received a 45-minute deep tissue Swedish massage saw decreased levels of the stress hormone cortisol in blood and saliva, and in arginine vasopressin, a hormone that can lead to increases in cortisol. They also experienced an increase of white blood cells in their immune systems.

Volunteers who received a light massage for 45 minutes experienced greater increases in oxytocin, a hormone associated with contentment, than the Swedish massage group. They also saw greater decreases in adrenal corticotropin hormone, which stimulates the adrenal glands to release cortisol.

So go out and get a massage today! It's good for you!
