The proof is in the pudding…well, more specifically, in the neuroscience. In Gina Kolata’s Personal Best column in today’s New York Times, she reports that there is now scientific evidence that, “Running does elicit a flood of endorphins in the brain.”
Using PET scans and chemicals to reveal endorphins in the brain, runners’ brains were analyzed both before and after a 2-hour run. The “euphoric” effect of long runs was given scientific credence.
However, you don’t necessarily have to be running to create the “runner’s high.” Intense endurance exercise of any variety, such as biking and swimming, can produce elevated moods as well. In the Sports Center’s CP Throttle triathlon training program, early morning endurance swimming, running and biking provides not only unparalleled camaraderie in a team training environment, but a healthy dose of pre-work euphoria.

Most of us can’t imagine running as fast as Bernard Lagat, the 2007 World Outdoor Champion in the 1,500 and 5,000-meter distances who has twice stood on the Olympic podium. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, 12 hundredths of a second separated him from the gold.
At BlueStreak, we understand that a tenth of a second, an eighth of an inch or an additional burst of energy can make the difference between finishing first, winning the game or even making the final cut for the team. And, while the outcome for most of us isn’t played out on the Olympic stage, it doesn’t make the struggle and the determination any less important.
Four years later with four more years of experience behind him, Lagat will give his dream of Olympic gold another chance at fulfillment in Beijing. When’s your Beijing? Are you ready for it? At Chelsea Piers BlueStreak, we’ll show you how to take your sport to the next level.
Click here to read "A Runner Dreams of Gold Under a New Flag" from The New York Times, the first in a series that will follow Lagat on the road to Beijing.

Running hats are certainly fashionable within the road running community. And, with their sweat-wicking and glare-reducing qualities, they are also extremely functional. For The New York Times’ Fashion & Style Gear Test today, Brad O’Brien, the president of the Tamalpa Runners in Marin County, California, tested (and reviewed) five hats during his training and racing.
Chelsea Piers sponsor adidas came out on top with the adidas Supernova Cap as O’Brien’s favorite. Click here to check out the review and get more details.

Bring It On, one of the Sports Center’s newest classes, was featured in New York Magazine’s March 10th “Best Of” issue. The magazine writes that the class “produces a satisfying, ‘I’m in a music video,’ feeling that goes a long way to counteract the boredom of a standard body-sculpting session.” Want in on the action? Let your hair down Thursdays at 5:30pm and dance your way to a new you – just make sure you Bring It!
Click here to read more of what New York Magazine had to say about Bring It On, a class so great, “You won’t even know you’re sweating!”

Chelsea Piers BlueStreak was featured in the Master Class section of the March 2008 New York Times Sports Magazine, PLAY, which came out in this past weekend’s Sunday paper. Thirty-four year old writer and adult-league soccer player Josh Dean trained at BlueStreak under the watchful eyes of John Feugill, a former professional football player, Tina Prickett, BlueStreak’s soccer coordinator, and Abuto King Nyanjong, a former member of the Kenyan national soccer team, and chronicled his progress, “contorted, purple face” and all in PLAY’s "Be Nimble, Be Quick…"
