Summer Camp Teams Up with Operation Backpack
Craig Woodcock, Director of Chelsea Piers Summer Camps
July 30, 2009
Chelsea Piers Summer Camp is teaming up with Operation Backpack, Volunteers of America's annual campaign to provide backpacks and school supplies for homeless children in NYC. Operation Backpack's goal is to ensure that every child in the shelter system returns to school this fall with exactly the supplies they need. Last year, Operation Backpack's efforts resulted in 7,000 children receiving full backpacks and another 1,000 receiving unfilled backpacks.
If you would like to participate, here's what you can do: Please drop a new backpack, schools supplies or a backpack filled with grade-appropriate school supplies in the collection box in the Sky Rink lobby from July 27 to August 9.
To see the recommended, grade-appropriate school supply list and get the labels to place on your filled backpack, please click here.

Peter Kormann, Field House Director of Gymnastics
July 14, 2009
Five-foot Field House gymnast Erin Tucker is in it to win it! Erin’s highly successful run in Level 9 this spring is impressive to all. At the Junior Olympic regional competition in April, Erin stole the show by winning the all-around competition, finishing first in floor exercise and uneven bars and third on the vault. Shortly thereafter, Erin finished fourth in the all-around, third on the beam and fourth on the vault at the Eastern National Championships – a competition where competitors hail from the entire eastern seaboard. Erin practices six days a week, 12 months a year and the entire Chelsea Piers gymnastics family is proud of her accomplishments. Keep your eye on this rising star because her goal is to become an elite gymnast and compete in college.
