Program Highlights
Chelsea Piers After-School Programs
The Chelsea Piers Scholarship Fund provides an opportunity for children to become actively involved in athletics on an on-going basis throughout the year. Scholarship recipients take weekly classes in golf, gymnastics, figure skating, ice hockey, soccer, basketball and baseball. These classes allow under-resourced children to immerse themselves in a specific sport and learn valuable life lessons including teamwork, sportsmanship, dedication, commitment and hard work.
Chelsea Piers Summer Camp Program
The Chelsea Piers Summer Camp programs have the double benefit of providing children in need with a safe, fun and instructive environment during the summer months, while at the same time opening up a world of opportunities through participation in organized sports. Many of the children served by the CPSF have parents that work full-time, creating a child-care issue during the summer months. Chelsea Piers Summer Sports Camp provides a full-day program from 9:00am – 4:00pm, which includes meals and snacks.
Chelsea Piers Gymnastics Team Program
The Chelsea Piers Scholarship Fund provides funding for promising gymnasts that do not have the means to pursue competitive gymnastics. CPSF believes strongly in allowing athletes to reach their full potential and provides financial aid to those children in need. The team program is a 10-month intensive, competitive program. In 2009, a gymnastics team member funded by CPSF earned a full college scholarship for gymnastics.
The Link Mentorship After-School Golf Program
The Link Mentorship After-School Golf Program is a partnership with CPSF and two additional non-profit organizations, Athletes in Action and Play Smart. These organizations are dedicated to increasing opportunities for under-resourced children through committed participation in athletics and academics. The Chelsea Piers Scholarship Fund, in conjunction with these organizations, developed a mentorship program that combines the use of professional athletes and the discipline of golf to yield powerful results with middle-school children. Each week for six weeks the children in this program focus on a different facet of the game and a different core value that carries over into their daily lives. This program has been running for over seven years.
Bellevue Hospital Fun Fit Program
In 2006, Bellevue Hospital partnered with CPSF on a program to help address the issue of childhood obesity. This program, run through Bellevue Hospital, was designed to change the lives of obese children by creating an intensive one-year nutrition and exercise program. Children in the program ranged in age from 6 to 13. The first six-months of the fitness and nutrition program were administered at Bellevue Hospital. Children that successfully completed the first six- months of the program were invited to participate in the Fun Fit program at Chelsea Piers for an additional six- months. The program included strength training, fitness games and cardiovascular activities, such as rock climbing. The children that participated in this program were taught how to take care of their bodies and how to make fitness and exercise a part of their life outside of the gym. The exercise program was administered at the Field House at Chelsea Piers and was funded by the Chelsea Piers Scholarship Fund.
