Set Up Your Putt Like A Pro

By Allan Renz, Lead Teaching Professional

Allan has identified what he believes to be an optimal putting method. Paramount to this method, Allan explains, "is developing the correct posture and body alignment at set-up, one that the player is able to repeatedly achieve." Once the player can consistently recreate the correct set-up position, the putting stroke is also more likely to be reliable and, therefore, effective.

If you would like to learn how to putt more like a tour pro, or at least improve on the current state of your short game, Allan recommends that you follow these tips:

  1. Your weight should be split: 45% on your right/back side and 55% on your left/front side.
  2. The top of the shaft should be directly over the ball.
  3. Sternum should be directly over the leading edge of the putter.
  4. Hang your head so that the top of your back is flat, causing Cervical No. 7 to be the pivot point.
  5. Your left hand (or non-dominant hand) should be directly underneath your pivot point.
  6. The shaft angle of the putter should match the angle of your left arm (a properly fitted putter is key).
  7. Be sure to keep your knees slightly flexed to ensure maximum balance and stability.

Best of luck with your game.
