GREEN EVENTS

Chelsea Piers welcomes eco-friendly organizations to showcase their programs and/or products at Chelsea Piers. Here are just a few examples:

  • Chelsea Piers Honored by ConEdison Solutions
    April 23, 2009
Chelsea Piers celebrated Earth Day 2009 with a new title - "Green Pioneer." ConEdison Solutions recognized Chelsea Piers and other 100% green power purchasers at a press conference at Sky Rink. ConEdison Solutions announced Chelsea Piers' rank as New York City's largest commercial purchaser of 100% wind power. Highlights of the event include artwork made from recycled items by students at P.S. 11 and New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. We have made a comprehensive commitment to environmental best practices and are proud to be considered a green leader in New York City.

  • Benefit Dance Performance at the Sports Center
    November 10, 2008
As part of an ongoing series of benefit dance performances, the Sports Center at Chelsea Piers health club hosted a dance recital on Monday, November 10, 2008, to benefit MillionTreesNYC, one of the City of New York’s 127 “PlaNYC” initiatives. PlaNYC is a comprehensive plan that addresses the critical challenges ahead and promotes a sustainable future for the City. This public-private program has an ambitious goal: to plant and care for one million new trees across the City's five boroughs over the next decade. The dance recital featured Sports Center members, instructors and guest performers. One hundred percent of the money raised was donated to MillionTreesNYC.

  • The Science Barge
    October 2 - October 31, 2008
The Science Barge is a prototype, sustainable urban farm and environmental education center. It is the only fully functioning demonstration of renewable energy supporting sustainable food production in New York City. The Science Barge grows tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce with zero net carbon emissions, zero chemical pesticides, and zero runoff. The Science Barge hosted over 3,000 schoolchildren from all five New York boroughs as well as surrounding counties as part of our environmental education program. In addition, over 6,000 adult visitors have visited the facility along with press from around the world.

  • GeoWash
    September 9 – October 9, 2008
GeoWash is a new, eco-friendly concept in car washing. GeoWash uses state-of-the-art mobile car washing carts about the size of a scooter. Each GeoWash cart has a battery pack to power a vacuum, propelling a light mist of water and foamless detergents from a self-contained water holder. Each GeoWash car wash, on average, uses less than a quarter gallon of water to wash a car compared to the approximately 90 gallons of water used via traditional car washing methods!
