CHELSEA PIERS GYMNASTS QUALIFY AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Two
Girls are crowned State Champions at their Level
On
March 28 and 29, 1998, at the State Championships, held
this year in Utica, New York, eight girls from the Chelsea
Piers Girls Gymnastics Team competed in the Level 9
and Level 10 divisions. The Level 9 team consisted of
three girls, the Level 10 team consisted of five girls,
all eight from New York City.
At
the Level 9 division, fifteen-year-old Zebe Sakayama
of Manhattan placed first in the All-Around with a score
of 35.875 out of a possible 40.00 and first place in
the Vault with a 9.10 score out of a possible 10.00.
These two first-place scores and second place in the
Beam and third places in the Floor and Bars, set Zebe
in place as the State Champion for Level 9, which also
qualifies her for the Regionals in five weeks. Twelve-year-old
Elizanghela Zambrano from Manhattan, also competing
in the Level 9 division, qualified for Regional with
a second place finish in the Vault and tenth place in
the All-Around.
In
the Level 10 division, fourteen-year-old Kathryn
Fong of Brooklyn finished the meet as State Champion
and qualified for the Level 10 Regionals in three weeks
with three first-place finishes in the All-Around with
a score of 36.625, in the Vault with a score of 9.325,
and in the Bars with a score of 9.400. Kathryn also
placed second in the Floor, and sixth in the Beam. Three
other girls qualified for Regionals in the Level 10
division; fourteen-year-old Nicole Groccia of
Brooklyn, and two eighteen-year-olds from the Senior
Division Level 10: Vera Weiss and Kate Hirshmann,
both of Manhattan.
All
the Chelsea Piers Gymnasts train at the Field House
located at Pier 62, Chelsea Piers, 23rd Street and the
Hudson River in Manhattan. The Level 10 regionals will
be held at the University of Massachusetts on April
17-19 and the Level 9 Regionals will be held at Albany,
NY on April 24-26.
The
Field House at Chelsea Piers is a USA Gymnastics-sanctioned
