On
Sunday, June 21, 1998, from Noon until 4:00 PM, Chelsea
Piers is presenting another in its series of FREE
family events, Chelsea Piers CENTENNIAL SUMMER
PICNIC presented by DIME Bank, to celebrate
the 100th Birthday of New York City. A perfect way to
celebrate Father's Day, the event will feature sports
and street games that were popular 100 years ago, and
is presented as part of NYC100 Centennial Weekend.
Come
back with us to 1898 for a summer picnic along the banks
of the beautiful Hudson River, featuring lots of family
games, including three-legged races, balloon relays,
hop scotch, scully and other NYC favorites, with a special
kids' play area! Test your arm at Turn-of-the-Century
Baseball, or try to dunk our bathing beauties! The event
features the First Annual Chelsea Piers Barbershop Quartet
Contest (with cash prizes for the winners); Straka and
Sheridan's Old Time Sideshow; the christening of the
55-passenger speedboat, Chelsea Screamer; Dixieland
music all day by Linda Ipanema and the Dixie Cats; a
large, exciting midway with many carnival games and
prizes for young and old; train rides for the kids;
plus stiltwalkers, jugglers and other surprises for
the whole family. In addition, as part of Neighborhood
Week '98 (sponsored by The Citizens Committee for New
York City) neighborhoods all around the city will be
baking birthday cakes for the NYC Birthday Cake Contest.
The finalists will be displayed at Chelsea Piers, and
a $1,000 cash prize will be awarded to the winning neighborhood
cake.
Join
us at 3:00 PM when all the bells in the city will ring,
and we'll sing "Happy Birthday, New York City," with
a special guest cutting the New York City Birthday Cake.
