THE
SPORTS CENTER AT CHELSEA PIERS
TO HOST 1998 NATIONAL CLIMBING COMPETITION
The
Sports Center at Chelsea Piers will host the 1998
American Sport Climbing Federation (ASCF) National
Climbing Competition this Fall. The two day event
will be held on November 21 and 22, 1998 and will
attract the top climbers from around the country.
Competition begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday the 21st
and 12:00 p.m. on Sunday the 22nd. Climbers will be
competing for prize money, national ranking points
and a position on the 1999 U.S. Climbing Team.
The
Fall 1998 ASCF National Climbing Competition will
feature approximately 90 of the top climbers in the
U.S., both men and women, ranging in age from 16 to
40. Climbers will compete in both difficulty and speed
climbing events on the most challenging indoor wall
in the world. The Sports Center's 46-foot high wall
offers over 10,000 square feet of climbing surface,
including a 16-foot overhang competition roof that
provides climbers with the ultimate challenge. Climbers
will compete on difficulty routes over 50 feet long,
set by national route setter Scott Mechler.
The
Sports Center is the first facility on the East Coast
to host an ASCF National Competition and will be open
to the public on both days for this exciting event.
Spectators may purchase one-day passes for $15, two-day
passes for $25, or two-day VIP passes (priority floor
seating) for $45. Tickets may be reserved in advance
by calling 212.336.6054 and will also be available at
the door, subject to availability. Space is limited.

Sports Center at Chelsea Piers, a 150,000 square foot
sports and fitness training facility, is widely recognized
as one of the best sports clubs in America. In addition
to being home to the largest climbing wall in the Northeast,
the Sports Center includes the world's longest indoor
running track, a 25-yard swimming pool, boxing ring,
sand volleyball court, basketball courts, and over 20,000
square feet of cardiovascular and strength training
equipment.
The
Sports Center's climbing programs are taught by internationally
recognized climbers and include top roping and belayer
certification, private and semi-private instruction,
