JUNIOR
GOLF IS GROWING AT THE GOLF CLUB AT CHELSEA PIERS
As Sport Attracts Younger Players Nationally, Trend
Continues Here on the Hudson
In
the past, most young people on a golf course were there
for the green---money that is. Lugging clubs around
the golf course as a caddie earned many a teenager cash
over s ummer vacation. Today, more and more kids are
taking up the game, making golf one of the fastest growing
sports among young people. This surge in popularity
is often attributed to the high profile career of Tiger
Woods.
No
matter what the reason, one thing's for sure---golf
is growing. For many New York City kids, the Golf Club
at Chelsea Piers is the place to hone their skills.
After school programs bring students from St. David's,
Browning, Dwight and Trinity to the Golf Club's four-tier
driving range each week. This isn't just a recreation
period: students receive top instruction from the Golf
Club's team of PGA professionals.
For
the die-hard junior golfer, Chelsea Piers also offers
a summer golf camp. Not only do participants receive
instruction in every part of their game (computerized
technology charts their swing), campers also take part
in Chelsea Piers' full range of other sports activities,
including ice-skating, rock climbing and swimming.
Last
year, over 300 young people, ages six and up, participated
in a Golf Club program. Whether for an after school
class, a Saturday morning lesson, open tee-time for
juniors or a mini-camp over Spring Break, the Golf Club
at Chelsea Piers offers its youngest users a range of
ways to improve their game.
