KING OF THE STREET COMPETITION KICKS OFF
SATURDAY AT CHELSEA PIERS
They'll
be turning 360s, hitting a soul grind, landing transfers
and flips--maybe even doing a brainless this Saturday,
May 15th, at the Skate Park at Chelsea Piers. Just in
case you aren't up on your aggressive skating lingo,
those terms describe daredevil stunts you'll see at
the Chelsea Piers 1999 King of the Street competition.
Designed to give beginner skaters an opportunity to
test their tricks in an aggressive skating competition,
the 1999 King of the Street competition runs
from 4:30pm-10pm Saturday evening, under the lights
at the Skate Park at Chelsea Piers, Pier 62, 23rd Street
& the Hudson River.
Competitors
as young as 6-years-old will be judged on the following
four criteria:
- Style:
how stylishly do you perform your tricks? Do you make
it look easy?
- Creativity
and Line : How do you skate through the course
and connect your tricks? Is your approach to the course
new, fresh or innovative or are you gimmicky?
- Technical
merit : Every trick has a level of difficulty.
How hard were your tricks?
- Congruity:
How consistently do you land your tricks?
Saturday's
competition is the first of four 1999 King of the
Street qualifying events. Similar competitions will
also be held June 19, July 10, August 21. Winners from
each competition will compete in the 1999 King of
the Street finals on September 11, 1999.
With
stunning views of the Hudson River and the Empire State
Building as its backdrop, the Skate Park at Chelsea
Piers is one of the premier aggressive skating facilities
in the world. The park features a 24-foot wide, 11.5
foot tall vert ramp, mini-ramp and a fun box, as well
as 2 brand new 6 x 16-foot quarter pipes and an 3 x
8-foot launch box.
The
competition is FREE to spectators. There is a $25 fee
to enter the competition. Please call 212.336.6200 for
