Third
Annual Kid's Performing Arts Day at Chelsea Piers
Presented by DIME
Saturday,
July 24, 1999, Noon - 4:00 PM
On
Saturday, July 24, 1999, from Noon until 4:00 PM, Chelsea
Piers is presenting another in its series of FREE
family events, the Third Annual Chelsea Piers KIDS'
PERFORMING ARTS DAY presented by DIME Bank. This
is definitely the family event of the summer, and a
fun-filled day of performances, workshops and clinics
in music, theatre and dance, plus storytellers, face
painters and lots of other surprises. 4,000-5,000 people
are expected to attend.
Five
stages will showcase continuous entertainment, including
some terrifying lab experiments from the cast of the
Broadway musical smash Jekyll & Hyde; an expanded Circus
Magik offering magicians, jugglers and clowns performing
in the Main Ring; the wonderful Mike Weaver who will
again be Making Music With Computers; and delightful
singer Gemma who will present her award-winning show,
Broadway for Beginners. Also featured will be NYC's
own Camp Broadway, which will showcase Broadway's Footloose
with karaoke for kids, and renowned modern dance choreographer,
JoAnna Mendl Shaw, whom we have commissioned to create
a new piece, Dancing Wheels, featuring in-line skaters
and dancers performing together.
Returning
to the Plaza Stage will be one of last year's special
favorites, the Irish band Morning Star, and coming back
for a third visit will be our good friends, the New
Victory Theater and Barry Keating's Starmite Puppets.
Again this year we are proud to present a special appearance
by Young Dancemakers Company, an ensemble of student
dancers from NYC public high schools who will perform
their original choreography.
New
additions for 1999 include the fabulous accapella singing
group The Ephlats; special musical theatre workshops
conducted by NYC's famous young people's theatre company,
TADA!; and exciting performances by The Puppetry Arts
Theatre, Inc., a new not-for-profit Off Broadway theatre
featuring extraordinary life-size puppets by Timothy
Young. In addition, The Dance Institute at the Field
House at Chelsea Piers will be offering scheduled dance
classes throughout the event, including Jazz and Mommy
and Me (Ages 2-5, Daddies welcome!), taught by instructor,
Juliet Mann. Also, don't miss the display of beautiful
hand-crafted heirloom puppet theatres by artist Craig
Thompson.
An
extra-special attraction will be the Second Edition
of "SUMMER ICE," an exciting figure skating show staged
in our outdoor artificial ice arena, featuring performances
by professional figure skaters.
The
Third Annual Chelsea Piers KIDS' PERFORMING ARTS
DAY presented by DIME Bank will be fun for all ages,
