AT
LAST! CHELSEA PIERS INTRODUCES
URBAN ADVENTURE FOR TEENS
Are
your teens looking for adventure this summer? Here's
a way for them to stay in town with their friends, yet
have a summer full of exciting sports activities plus
great stories to tell all through the fall.
Beginning
July 3, 2000, as part of its Summer Sports Camp Program,
Chelsea Piers will offer Urban Adventure,
two-week sessions of intensive instruction in kayaking,
rock-climbing and sailing, for boys and girls ages 13-17.
This year, four different sessions will be offered:
July 3-14, July 17-28, July 31-August 11 and August
14-25, each session featuring individual instruction
at beginner to advanced levels. For those who'd like
to enroll in multiple sessions, the curriculum is cumulative.
Chelsea
Piers, located along the beautiful Hudson River, provides
the ideal setting for instruction and competition with
expert instructors and world-class facilities. The Urban
Adventure program is based at the Sports Center
on Pier 60 at Chelsea Piers. The Sports Center, recognized
as one of the premier sports and fitness clubs in America,
contains the setting for the rock climbing component
of the program: the largest indoor rock climbing wall
in the Northeast. (The Sports Center also features Manhattan's
largest and most-extensive cardiovascular and strength
training areas, a 1/4-mile indoor running track, three
hardwood basketball courts, indoor sand volleyball,
a 25-yard swimming pool and more). The sailing program
provides both classroom instruction and sailing instruction
aboard the Schooner Adirondack, a 78-foot replica
of a classic twin-masted schooner. Kayakers use a variety
of approved, safe sea kayaks which are selected to match
each camper's size and experience. Both sailing and
kayaking make use of the beautiful Hudson River and
New York bay, one of the finest natural harbors in the
world, and, surprisingly, one of the cleanest. All trips
are planned to work with the tides and currents.
Teens
will also enjoy dry-land activities including strength
training, cardiovascular training, beach volleyball
and much more. At the end of each session, participants
will have the opportunity to put their newly-acquired
skills to use in short kayak and sailing trips and a
rock climbing competition. The program includes nourishing,
well-balanced and generous lunches for all participants
at a midday break, which is a time for relaxation, meeting
with friends, and sharing experiences.
Tuition
for the first two-week session is $895, with each additional
session priced at $850. Bus service is available for
an additional moderate charge.
Chelsea
Piers also offers 8 other sports camps for kids ages
3-16: Sports Academy, Gymnastics, Aggressive In-line,
Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, Golf, Preschool or Roller
Hockey!
The
exciting Urban Adventure program is filling
up fast, but some places are still available. To register
