CHINESE
FIGURE SKATERS TAKE TO THE ICE
AT SKY RINK AT CHELSEA PIERS
The
future is bright for Chinese figure skating, and that
country's transformation into a world power in the sport
is evident at Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers. The occasional
presence of World Champion and Olympic Bronze Medalist,
Lu Chen, has been one of the main reasons behind the
newfound enthusiasm for skating among the Chinese community,
both at home and here in New York City. When she's in
town, Lu Chen frequently skates at Sky Rink, and often
passes along advice to aspiring Sky Rink skaters who
share the ice with her.
The
addition of skating pro Tian Yi Zhang to the Sky Rink
teaching staff has also helped promote figure skating
among the many Asians who frequent the rinks. Tian Yi's
transition to skating in America has been smooth, and
she is now a featured performer with Ice Theatre of
New York, the nation's pre-eminent ice dancing ensemble,
in residence at Chelsea Piers. As three-time National
Ice Dance Champion of China (1995-97) and Silver Medalist
in the Asia Championships in 1996, Tian Yi came to Sky
Rink with a wealth of knowledge about the skills necessary
to succeed in international competition. By imparting
some of that wisdom to younger Chinese skaters, Tian
Yi has been able to rouse the interest of many. "When
I got here two years ago," said Tian Yi, "we had almost
no Chinese skaters. But I've spent a lot of time talking
to, and working with, the young ones. They respond to
me because I know their culture, and because I can communicate
with the parents who don't speak English." Her
guidance and inspiration have stimulated a change in
attitude of Chinese families toward ice skating in New
York City.
The
evidence of this change is in numbers. More young Chinese
skaters are in the Sky Rink competitive program than
ever before. The increased number of large groups of
Chinese teens coming to Sky Rink indicates that ice
skating is becoming mainstream among Chinese New York
City residents. To celebrate the Year of the Dragon,
Sky Rink welcomed a record number of Chinese teens who
spent their New Year's holiday on ice skates. The kids
love it because it's fun, and the parents support their
enthusiasm because they know that figure skating is
a safe and healthy sport for their children.
Sky
Rink at Chelsea Piers is the only year-round, indoor
ice skating arena in Manhattan. It features two rinks,
one with seating for 1,600 spectators, locker facilities,
a BLADES Board and Skate pro shop, skate rental, a Famous
Famiglia cafe, and dance and fitness studios. Two lounges,
two sky boxes and a beautifully-appointed 6,000-sq.-ft.
sun deck with its own bar are all available for special
events.
