a not-for-profit fund established and administered by
an independent group of volunteers. The Fund is committed
to providing New York City children in need with the
opportunity to experience the enormous benefits and
enjoyment of participation in athletics. The Fund believes
that structured sports help children gain self-confidence
and self-esteem, develop social skills, learn sportsmanship
and teamwork, set and achieve goals, and learn from
positive role models.
The
Scholarship Fund, tax exempt under section 501(c)(3)
of the Internal Revenue Code, sponsors the participation
of children in summer sports camps, instructional and
team programs and other appropriate sports activities
at Chelsea Piers and throughout the city. To select
scholarship recipients, The Fund works with organizations
such as The Fresh Air Fund, Figure Skating in Harlem
and The Children's Aid Society, and accepts individual
applications for specific programs. All funding for
The Chelsea Piers Scholarship Fund is received through
individual donations, fundraising activities such as
SPORTS CARNIVAL 2000 and corporate grants.
Chelsea Piers has made a founding grant to launch The
Fund and ensure its success.
