Chelsea
Piers RiverMusic Festival Features Four Outdoor Concerts
Last
September, Chelsea Piers produced an affordable, outdoor
blues concert that was an immediate success and which
attracted an audience from across the tri-state area.
That perfect moonlit night, with non-stop music on two
stages, brought a new kind of excitement to the Piers.
Based on the enormous success of that evening, Chelsea
Piers is proud to expand that event into a full concert
series, the first annual RiverMusic Festival,
featuring four different concerts, scheduled once a
month from June until September. Each outdoor concert
along the beautiful Hudson River will feature a different
type of music performed by some of the New York region's
top bands. The festival is sponsored by Virgin Megastore
and the Village Voice.
Scheduled
are: "Loco for Salsa" on June 17, 2000, "A
Little Bit of Country" on July 8, 2000, "A Wee
Irish Fling" on August 12, 2000, and "Blues in
the Night" on September 9, 2000. RiverMusic Festival
concerts run from 6:00 PM until 1:00 AM. (Raindates
are June 18, July 9, August 13 and September 10.)
"Loco
for Salsa" features great Latin music by Johnny
Almandra y Los Jovenes Del Barrio, Louis Bauzo & Carambu,
Luis Blasini & Iroko, Wayne Gorbea & Salsa Picante,
Grupo Imagen and Ralph Irizarry & Timbalaye, and there
will be plenty of room for dancing at this one. Scheduled
to appear at "A Little Bit of Country" are Jim
Roll & the Silos, Lil' Mo and the Minicats, Demolition
String Band, Miss Babs and the Kickin' Boogie Band,
Hank Williams Lonesome Cheatin' Heart Club Band and
more. Among those already booked for "A Wee Irish
Fling" are The Prodigals, Rogues March and Morning
Star, with other great bands still to come. "Blues
in the Night" will feature Dana Fuchs, Seņor Lucky,
Taino, Kid Java, and lots more. Additional bands are
being booked now.
RiverMusic
Festival concerts will be held at the Roller Rinks
at Chelsea Piers, Pier 62, 23rd Street and the Hudson
River, New York City. Each outdoor concert will feature
continuous music on two stages, beergarden seating (with
dancing in the aisles encouraged), lots of great food,
beer and other beverages available for purchase, plus
some special surprises and door prizes.
Admission
is $10 per person, and kids under 16 will be admitted
free when accompanied by an adult. A portion of the
proceeds will benefit VH1 Save the Music, a non-profit
organization dedicated to improving the quality of education
in America's public schools by restoring and supporting
music programs in cities around the country, and by
raising public awareness about the importance of music
participation for our Nation's youth.
