Saturday,
July 22, 2000, Noon - 4:00pm On Saturday, July 22, 2000,
from Noon until 4:00pm, Chelsea Piers is presenting
another in its series of FREE family events, the Fourth
Annual Chelsea Piers KIDS' PERFORMING ARTS DAY presented
by DIME Bank. This is definitely the family event
of the summer, and a fun-filled day of performances,
workshops and clinics in music, theater and dance, plus
storytellers, face painters and lots of other surprises.
3,000-4,000 people are expected to attend.
Five
stages will showcase continuous entertainment, including
three performances by The Dazzling Mills Family, one
of the country's most popular comedy vaudeville acts,
whose four family members (and dog) are sure to delight
the entire family. The group includes father Steve,
a three-time National Juggling Champion, mother Carol,
six-time National Trick Unicycle Champion, and 13-year
old Michelle, three-time National Junior Unicycle Champion.
8-year old Anthony, and dog Snow Oui complete this dazzling
family act.
Also
starring in the day's festivities are Sidney J. Burgoyne,
a superb singer and one of NYC's favorite entertainers,
who will offer a musical Salute to Broadway; the wonderful
Mike Weaver who will again be Making Music With Computers;
and delightful singers Ice Cream and Chocolate who will
present their award-winning show, Jazz for Beginners.
This year we are very proud to offer a special guest
appearance by the Brazos Valley TROUPE starring in The
Great Rockinrolleville Revue. This song-and-dance company
from College Station, Texas, featuring 24 young performers
between the ages of 12 and 16, will perform at 12:30pm.
Returning
to the Plaza Stage will be one of the special favorites
of the last several years, the traditional Irish band
Morning Star, and coming back for a fourth visit will
be our good friends the New Victory Theater, Barry Keating's
Starmite Puppets, and NYC's own Camp Broadway. Once
again throughout the day, Timothy Young's extraordinary
life-size puppets will be entertaining the kids, and
staff from his not-for-profit Off Broadway company,
The Puppetry Arts Theater, Inc., will be teaching kids
to make their own puppets. In addition, The Dance Institute
at the Field House at Chelsea Piers will be offering
scheduled dance classes throughout the event, including
Jazz and Mommy and Me (Ages 2-5, Daddies welcome!),
taught by instructor, Juliet Mann.
An
extra-special attraction will be the Third Edition of
Summer Ice, an exciting figure skating show staged in
our outdoor artificial ice arena, featuring performances
by professional figure skaters. Starring in this year's
production will be three-time National Champion of China,
Tian Yi Zhang, and two-time National Champion of Sweden,
Emanuele Ancorini, plus other skaters including, direct
from the Russian State Circus, ice juggler Andrei Yanovskis.
The Fourth Annual Chelsea Piers KIDS' PERFORMING
ARTS DAY presented by DIME Bank will be fun for
all ages, so kids, bring your folks! (Lots of great
American food will be available for purchase.) Plus
there'll be facepainters, storytellers and lots of other
surprises. It all takes place on Saturday, July 22nd
on the Main Plaza and Roller Rinks on Pier 62, 23rd
Street and the Hudson River, and it's FREE! For
