YOUR OLYMPICS COVERAGE NOW AT CHELSEA PIERS
Plan
Ahead! The XXVII Olympiad is scheduled for September
15-October 1, 2000 in Sydney, Australia. If you're thinking
about feature stories to accompany your reporting, please
consider Chelsea Piers as both a location and a source
of interesting Olympics-related stories.
The 80,000-square-foot Field House at Chelsea Piers
is home to the largest gymnastics training center in
New York City and one of the largest such facilities
in the United States. It is the only gymnastics facility
in New York City sanctioned for competition by USA Gymnastics,
the national governing body. The facility features two
column-free competition spring floors and at least two
sets of equipment for each of the men's and women's
Olympic events (balance beam, uneven bars, high bar,
parallel bars, still rings, pommel horse and the vault),
as well as sunken trampolines and tumble tracks. Deep
foam pits recessed into the floor beneath the equipment
and overhead spotting rigs create the optimal safe-learning
environment. Also at the Field House: 2 artificial turf
fields (which can accomodate indoor soccer and field
hockey), 2 hardwood basketball courts, 4 baseball batting
cages, 4 dance studios ideal for fencing, and a gym
floor perfect for judo and wrestling.
The 150,000-square-foot Sports Center at Chelsea Piers
includes the world's longest indoor running track (4-lane,
1/4-mile) and the largest rock climbing wall in the
Northeast, as well as one of the largest cardiovascular
and strength training facilities in the country. In
addition to an extensive selection of fitness and strength
training programs, the Sports Center offers league play,
wellness seminars, sport-specific training programs
and spa services. Also at the Sports Center: a 6-lane,
200-meter banked competition track, an 18,000-square-foot
flexible infield that accommodates track & field events
(as well as volleyball and badminton), an indoor sand
volleyball court, 3 hardwood basketball courts located
in the infield, a 6-lane, 25-yard swimming pool (with
2 sundecks overlooking the Hudson River), and a boxing
ring. The new and enhanced boxing program is supervised
by professional boxing trainers using state-of-the-art
equipment. The program includes training for first-time
boxers, group and private instruction including circuit
training and sparring, and boxing cards.
The
esplanade around Chelsea Piers is 1.2 miles long, making
the Chelsea Piers Maritime Center the largest marina
in New York City, accomodating a wide range of vessels,
from dinner boats (Bateaux New York, Spirit Cruises)
to the 54-passenger speedboat Chelsea Screamer,
to the 78-foot Schooner Adirondack. The Maritime
Center also features: Surfside 3 Marina (small
boat marina with 70 slips and a Sea Ray boat dealership),
Chelsea Piers Yacht Charter Services, Steve and
Doris Colgate's Offshore Sailing School, a river
kayaking program, and dockage for some of the world's
largest and most-beautiful private yachts. The Chelsea
Piers Maritime Center can provide the perfect setting
for canoe, kayak and yachting coverage.
