ATLANTIC FIGURE SKATING CHAMPIONSHIPS THIS WEEK AT SKY
RINK AT CHELSEA PIERS
The
75th Annual Middle Atlantic Figure Skating Championships
will be held Thursday, September 21 through Sunday,
September 24, 2000 at Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers. The
competition, hosted by The Skating Club of New York,
began in 1920, and is the oldest non-qualifying competition
in the United States. This year's Diamond Anniversary
competition will be the largest ever held, with over
760 skaters, ages 6 to adult, registered to participate.
The Middle Atlantic Figure Skating Championships
is a highly prestigious event and consistently attracts
superior skaters and their coaches. Many U.S. and World
Champions have skated in a Middle Atlantic competition
at some point in their careers. These include Olympians
Dick Button, Carol Heiss, Dorothy Hamill, Rocky Marval
and Calla Urbanski, and, most recently, Tara Lipinski,
the 1998 Olympic Gold Medal Champion. In 1997, Sarah
Hughes, representing the Skating Club of New York, won
the Junior Ladies Gold Medal at Mids, and went on to
become the 1998 U.S. Junior Ladies National Champion.
She is now ranked in the top ten senior ladies in the
world. This year look for Chrissy Lipscomb, representing
the Skating Club of Lake Placid, who will attempt to
land a quad salchow in Friday night's freestyle competition.
A quad salchow has never been landed in competition
by a female skater. Chrissy has attempted this jump
before at the the recent Skate Detroit, and has successfully
landed it in practice.
