KING OF THE STREET 2001
AGGRESSIVE SKATING COMPETITION
KICKS OFF MAY 12 AT CHELSEA PIERS

They'll be turning 360s, hitting a soul grind, landing transfers and flips...maybe even doing a brainless on Saturday, May 12th, at the Extreme Park at Chelsea Piers. Just in case you aren't up on your aggressive skating lingo, those terms describe daredevil stunts you'll see at the Chelsea Piers King of the Street 2001 competition. Designed to give beginner skaters an opportunity to test their tricks in an aggressive skating competition, the King of the Street 2001 competition begins at 11:00am on Saturday morning, May 12, 2001 at the Extreme Park at Chelsea Piers, Pier 62, 23rd Street & the Hudson River.

Competitors as young as 6-years-old will be judged on the following four criteria:

  1. Style: how stylishly do you perform your tricks? Do you make it look easy?
  2. Creativity and Line: How do you skate through the course and connect your tricks? Is your approach to the course new, fresh or innovative or are you gimmicky?
  3. Technical merit: Every trick has a level of difficulty. How hard were your tricks?
  4. Congruity: How consistently do you land your tricks?

The May 12th competition is the first of four King of the Street 2001 qualifying events. Similar competitions will also be held June 9, July 14, and August 18. Winners from each competition will compete in the King of the Street 2001 finals in September.

The Extreme Park has been New York City's premier Skate Park since its opening in 1997, offering daily skating sessions, clinics, private lessons, Extreme birthday party packages, Saturday night DJ parties, and a nationally-known summer camp.

A recent expansion of the Park last winter brought it to 20,000 square feet - over four times its former size, with more equipment for skateboarders and BMX riders, as well as a larger fun box for aggressive skaters, more open space to ease congestion, and a separate area for beginners.

The King of the Street 2001 competition is FREE to spectators and is sponsored by AT&T Wireless, Evian, and Sprite. There is a $20 fee to enter the competition. Please call 212.336.6200 for more information.
