KAYAKING
AND OPEN WATER SWIM TRAINING
AT THE SPORTS CENTER AT CHELSEA PIERS
Come
on down to the river and get wet! This June, the
Sports Center at Chelsea Piers, New York's ultimate
health club, is introducing new programming that
will allow New Yorkers to take advantage of one of
Manhattan's greatest natural resources-the Hudson
River. Whether you want to kayak down to the Statue
of Liberty or swim from the 79th Street Boat Basin
to Chelsea Piers, our experienced staff has developed
programming to get you in shape for any and all of
it.
Open
Water Swim Camp, taught by veteran triathletes and
open water swimmers Scott Willet and Robert Valentin,
will be held on Wednesdays, June 6 through August
1. Cost is $275 for Sports Center members, $365 for
non-members. The 1 ½ hour class will help
prepare you for open water competitions, and focuses
on strength and flexibility training, open water
swim skills, videotaped technical feedback and nutrition
education. Our Open Water Swim Camp is designed to
get you in shape for the Great Hudson River Swim
(from the 79th Street Boat Basin to Chelsea Piers,
Pier 62) to be held on August 5th, 2001. We encourage
all participants to sign up for this race now at
www.nycswim.org.
If
you'd rather be on the water than swim in it, why
not try kayaking? Join adventurer/author Erik Stiller
on an excursion around the island of Manhattan, on
a basic tour of the Hudson, or just within the safety
of the piers. Beginning May 31, 2001 Rolling and
Rescue classes will be held in the pool at the Sports
Center. Learning to roll is one of the best ways
to develop all of your paddling skills, enhance your
confidence, and generally increase your capacity
as a paddler. The basic skills that will be taught
are rolling, bracing and some sculling. Classes are
$90, and the instructor to student ratio is 1:3.
Nose plugs and goggles are recommended, but not essential.
Class sizes are limited. To register or for more
information call 212.336.6099. |
