THE
FIELD HOUSE AT CHELSEA PIERS ANNOUNCES
ARRIVAL OF WORLD-CLASS GYMNASTICS DIRECTOR
The
Field House at Chelsea Piers is pleased to welcome
Peter Kormann as its new Gymnastics Director. Bringing
with him over 30 years of experience within the sport
of gymnastics-Collegiate Championships, Olympics
medals (as a competitor and as a coach), World and
Olympic coaching recognition-Peter ups the bar substantially
wherever he goes. We are thrilled to have him join
our staff.
Beginning
at the late age of 15, Peter started competing as
a high school gymnast and found a remarkable amount
of success quickly. By age 21, he had won an Olympic
medal. When he took that Bronze Medal in the floor
exercise at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Peter
went into the history books as the first American
gymnast since 1932 to win an Olympic medal. Some
achievements in his competitive career include two
gold medals at the Pan American Games, and the ability
to say that he was the only gymnast ever to win both
the NCAA Division I and Division II all-around titles
in the same year.
When
his competitive career came to an end, Peter decided
to try his hand at coaching. He spent 8 years coaching
men's gymnastics at the United States Naval Academy
(1980-1988), 7 years at Ohio State University (1989-1996)
where he coached the men's gymnastics team to a NCAA
championship title in 1996, and finally took a position
as the Men's National Team Coordinator for USA Gymnastics
(1996-2000). In November of 1999, Peter was named
Head Coach of the 2000 Olympic Games U.S. Gymnastics
Team, a job he also filled at the 1996 Olympic Games
in Atlanta.
With
Peter Kormann at the Field House at Chelsea Piers,
it's certain that gymnastics in New York City will
never be the same. |
