CHELSEA
PIERS PRESENTS THE FIFTH ANNUAL
KIDS' PERFORMING ARTS DAY
SATURDAY JULY 21ST
The
Family Event Of The Summer!
On
Saturday, July 21, 2001, from Noon until 4:00pm,
Chelsea Piers is presenting another in its series
of FREE family events, the Fifth Annual Chelsea Piers
KIDS' PERFORMING ARTS DAY, a fun-filled day of performances,
workshops and clinics in music, theatre and dance,
with face painters, balloon artists and lots of other
surprises. 3,000-4,000 people are expected to attend.
The
event will showcase continuous entertainment, including
three performances by The Dazzling Mills Family,
one of the country's most popular comedy vaudeville
acts, whose four family members (and dog) are sure
to delight our guests. This dazzling act includes
father Steve, a three-time National Juggling Champion,
mother Carol, six-time National Trick Unicycle Champion,
14-year old Michelle, three-time National Junior
Unicycle Champion, and 9-year old Anthony.
Also starring in the day's festivities are The Madcap Mutts, back by special
demand after three crowd-pleasing performances at our recent 5th Anniversary
Celebration! The Madcap Mutts, whose mission is to raise funds and awareness
for animal shelters through entertainment and education, are veterans of hundreds
of shows including Broadway's The Will Rogers Follies, the Radio City Music
Hall Spring Spectacular, and The Late Show with David Letterman. They are under
the direction of Tom and Bonnie Brackney, whose family has been presenting
trained dogs since 1939. They will be joined at the event by N.Y. Pet-I-Care,
a West Side grassroots not-for-profit program dedicated to rescuing, providing
medical care and placing for adoption, abused and abandoned strays.
Another
star of this year's event is The Catskill Puppet
People, which will offer three performances of its
acclaimed and most popular show, Sister Rain and
Brother Sun. The Catskill Puppet People was founded
in 1979 and is one of the country's preeminent touring
companies, presenting innovative and exciting puppetry
in the U.S. and Canada at over 270 shows a year.
This
year we are again proud to showcase the extraordinary
Young Dancemakers Company, an ensemble of student
dancers from NYC public high schools who will perform
their original choreography in excerpts from their
new program, and one of the special favorites of
the last several years, the traditional Irish band
Morning Star. Timothy Young's extraordinary life-size
puppets will again be entertaining the kids, and
staff from his not-for-profit Off Broadway company,
The Puppetry Arts Theatre, Inc., will be teaching
kids to make their own puppets. Also giving out treats
to the kids will be representatives from the Broadway
musicals The Music Man, Blast, Aida, The Lion King
and Beauty and the Beast. New this year will be a
delightful performance by the New York Saw Orchestra,
and coming back for a fifth visit will be our good
friends The New Victory Theater.
A
very popular part of the event each year has been
our production of Summer Ice, an exciting figure
skating show, staged on our outdoor artificial ice.
Starring in this year's fourth edition will be two-time
National Champion of Sweden, Emanuele Ancorini, plus
other skaters including the famed Ice Theatre of
New York.
The
Fifth Annual Chelsea Piers KIDS' PERFORMING ARTS
DAY will be fun for all ages, with face painters,
balloon artists, great door prizes and lots of other
surprises.
