Chelsea Piers Boys Gymnastics Team Wins New York State Championships

(New York, NY – April 1, 2004) -- The Boys Gymnastics Team at Chelsea Piers won the Level 5 State Championships on March 20th in Albany. It was the first time the Chelsea Piers team, which is the only boys team in Manhattan, has ever won States, besting 22 other teams from New York.

In addition to the Team Championship, there were also five individual boy state champions from Chelsea Piers:

  • Gavin Duncan, Age 9, Level 5 All-Around State Champion and Vault State Champion
  • Andrew Sage, Age 10, Level 6 All-Around State Champion
  • Jacob Katz, Age 12, Level Five Floor Champion
  • Sam Katz, Level 3 Vault and High Bar State Champion
  • Adam Ondira, Age 16, Level 3 Vault and Pommel Horse State Champion

The gymnasts from Level 3 (which is the higher of the levels) will be competing in the Regional Championships this weekend for a chance to qualify for the National Championships. The Level 5-7 Regionals will be held the weekend of April 17th, in Virginia.

Peter Kormann, who won an Olympic medal in gymnastics in the 1976 Olympic Games, runs both the girls and boys gymnastics program at Chelsea Piers. Hector Salazar, a member of the 1987 World Championship team, is the boys team head coach. “The boys really performed well,” commented Salazar. “The team has been steadily improving over the past several years. It is really rewarding to now see them as State Champions.”

About the Field House
The 80,000-square-foot Field House at Chelsea Piers opened on October 2, 1995. Its athletic facilities and children’s programs are unrivaled by any other venue in the city. The gymnastics center is the only gymnastics facility in New York City sanctioned for competition by USA Gymnastics. Two hardwood basketball courts and two artificial–turf playing fields are used for sports clinics and leagues for children and adults. Drop-in activities include the Toddler Adventure Center, batting cages, Rock-n-Roll classes, basketball and soccer. The Field House also offers birthday parties, dance, martial arts, and corporate team building activities.
