Chelsea Piers Roller Rinks To Host Summer Safety Skate
First 100 Children to Receive Free Safety Helmet

(New York, NY – July 1, 2004) – In order to encourage safe in-line skating habits, the Roller Rinks at Chelsea Piers is inviting families to participate in a free day of fun and safety. The Summer Safety Skate, which is sponsored by Children’s Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, Horizon Healthcare, and the hit music station Z100, will take place on Saturday, August 7th from 12:00-4:00pm. Horizon Healthcare will give away free skating helmets to the first one hundred children who arrive. Chelsea Piers skating instructors will offer free inline skating safety tips and advice. Admission is free, skate rental is additional.

For those looking to test-drive inline skates, Paragon Sporting Goods will bring the latest line of Rollerblades, along with the latest in Rollerblade safety technology, free giveaways and shopping coupons.

“Outdoor summer activities, like inline skating, are a fun way for children and their parents to get the aerobic exercise they need to maintain good health,” says Dr. Michael G. Vitale, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Columbia University College of Physician’s & Surgeons and attending surgeon, division of pediatric orthopedic surgery at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of NewYork-Presbyterian. “This free event is a great opportunity for beginners to learn correct and safe inline skating techniques at a facility specifically designed for this activity. In addition, all skaters should wear proper equipment, like helmets and wrist guards, to prevent unnecessary injuries and assure that the summer will be safe and healthy.”

“ Skating is a healthy and exciting form of exercise for children and adults of all ages,” said Thomas Boyajy, President and COO of Horizon Healthcare. “Horizon Healthcare is proud to support an exciting day at Chelsea Piers that promotes the use of safety equipment and a fun outdoor activity.”

In the event of rain, the Summer Safety Skate will be moved to Sky Rink’s indoor ice skating rinks at Pier 61, Chelsea Piers.
