TWO CHELSEA PIERS GYMNASTS AWARDED RARE OPPORTUNITY
TO TRAIN WITH FAMED OLYMPIC COACH, BELA KAROLYI
(New York, NY-October 24, 2007) - Anwen Herbert-Lewis, 9, and Erin Tucker, 10, two Chelsea Piers gymnasts, were elected to the TOPs National Gymnastics Team. TOPs (Talent Opportunity Program), is a talent search and educational program for female gymnast ages 7-11 and their coaches.
Members of the TOPs National Gymnastics team are invited to train at Bela Karolyi's National Camp in Houston, Texas this December. Karolyi, regarded as one of the most successful coaches in the history of gymnastics, coached Olympic greats, including Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton.
During June and July, 2400 gymnasts, ages 7-11, were evaluated on physical abilities at the state and regional levels. From there, approximately 250 athletes were invited to participate in October's National TOP test where they were evaluated on the same physical abilities tests as well as basic gymnastics skills. Anwen Herbert-Louis and Erin Tucker were among the 70 athletes chosen for the 2007 TOPs National Team.
According to Gary Anderson, the USA Gymnastics National Elite Program Chairman, the National Camp is "really a gathering of the girls who will become America's elite female gymnasts. The girls you see at National Camp will be showing up in the Olympics in 2012."
Both Anwen and Erin began their gymnastics careers six years ago at Chelsea Piers and now compete on the Chelsea Piers Gymnastics Team. Two of the four gymnasts from New York State chosen to be part of the TOPs National Team are from Chelsea Piers. Chelsea Piers is the only training facility in the region (including New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont and Maine) with more than one athlete chosen.
