The Science Barge Docks at Chelsea Piers

(New York, NY— October 15, 2008) – As part its green initiative, Chelsea Piers is thrilled to host the Science Barge, New York’s only sustainable urban farm. The Science Barge tours New York City’s public waterfront parks, offering sustainability education programs to wide audiences.

The barge will remain docked between Piers 61 and 62 through October. The public is invited to explore the floating greenhouse that is powered by solar, wind, and biofuels, and irrigated by rainwater and purified river water. Relying on sunlight, wind, and efficient design, the Science Barge produces food using a fraction of the resources consumed in conventional agriculture, with greatly reduced emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants.

“We are thrilled to have the Science Barge here at the Piers for the month,” commented David A. Tewksbury, Executive Vice President of Chelsea Piers Management. “The Science Barge is a great educational resource for New York City. The timing couldn’t have been better since Chelsea Piers is launching its own complex-wide green initiative this month.”

Public tours are free and operate on a first-come, first-served basis every Tuesday through Friday at 4:00pm, and at Noon, 1:00pm, 3:00pm and 4:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Kids of all ages will enjoy this eco-friendly field trip.
