Dance Benefit Performance for MillionTreesNYC
Benefit Part of Chelsea Piers’ Complex-wide Green Initiative
(New York, NY— November 11, 2008) – The Sports Center health club at Chelsea Piers hosted its third Dance Benefit on Monday, November 10, 2008 at 7:00pm—choreographed, inspired and performed by local artists and Chelsea Piers’ Sports Center instructors, members and friends. More than 150 guests enjoyed a program including jazz, ballet, modern dance and belly dancing. As Chelsea Piers joins the green movement and commits to ecological best practices, the chosen recipient of proceeds from the Sports Center’s third Dance Benefit is MillionTreesNYC.
Pioneering a new trend in fundraising, the Sports Center volunteered its time and space, and donated 100% of the proceeds, totaling $1700, to MillionTreesNYC. MillionTreesNYC is a city-wide initiative to plant and care for one million trees in New York City's five boroughs over the next decade.
Hosting a dance performance to benefit MillionTreesNYC is just one of many ways Chelsea Piers and the Sports Center community are contributing to the green movement. On October 1, 2008, Chelsea Piers launched a complex-wide “green” initiative, which included the purchase of 100% green wind power, the establishment of an on-site recycling program and an investment in energy-saving infrastructure improvements.
John Boyd, Group Fitness Director, spoke proudly of members and instructors, commenting, “It’s been a social bonding experience for them and seems to have renewed their energy and excitement in giving back to the community.” In addition to giving Sports Center members and employees the opportunity to rally around a worthy cause, it has also strengthened the already well-established notion of community at the health club. As enthusiasm and publicity for the Dance Benefits continue to grow, the Sports Center looks to broaden its outreach efforts, involving more members and contributing even more significantly to the community.
About MillionTreesNYC
MillionTreesNYC, one of the 127 PlaNYC initiatives, is a citywide, public-private program with an ambitious goal: to plant and care for one million new trees across the City's five boroughs over the next decade. By planting one million trees, New York City can increase its urban forest—its most valuable environmental asset composed of street trees, park trees, and trees on public, private and commercial land—by an astounding 20%, while achieving the many quality-of-life benefits that come with planting trees.
The City of New York will plant 60% of trees in parks and other public spaces. The other 40% will come from private organizations, homeowners, and community organizations.
