Structural Integration is a system of hands-on bodywork that balances and aligns the body through work on the connective tissue. Structural Integration was founded by Dr. Ida P. Rolf more than fifty years ago, and is sometimes referred to as 'Rolfing'.
The continuing pull of gravity, daily stressors, and physical injuries all contribute to shortening of the connective tissue, which can pull the body out of alignment. Imagine that you are wearing a wetsuit that covers your entire body head to toe. Now imagine that wetsuit is a size too small. The goal of Structural Integration is to lengthen and re-position this connective tissue where needed, in order to restore optimal functioning and increase bodily comfort.
Structural Integration is typically performed in a series of up to ten sessions. These sessions are administered progressively; each session building upon the last. The process of Structural Integration balances the body from front to back, side to side, top to bottom and inside to outside, resulting in improved vertical alignment.
Anyone can benefit from Structural Integration. Anyone who is an active user of their body and wants to fine tune their performance such as athletes, performers etc. as well as those seeking solutions to chronic strains and discomfort often seek out and benefit from the work. The effects of Structural Integration have been shown to be long-lasting.
