Congratulations to the Full Throttle Endurance
Racing team for another amazing finish at the 2011 RJA Mighty Montauk Memorial
Triathlon! Team members grabbed 9 podiums, including the top 3 overall
finishers to make the 8th consecutive year one to remember.
Laurel Wassner took the overall win at 1:53:25.3. Dave
Powers and Coach Andrew Kalley – last year’s overall winner – followed closely
behind, respectively. William Kelly closed out the top ten, finishing just
under two hours and claiming second in the M45-49.
And the medals didn’t stop there! In the 25-29 age group,
Kyla Burress claimed first place while Mark Guay took second amongst the
men. There was a complete sweep in the
F30-35 category with Melanie Wolff leading the pack, Maria Mahn and Elana
Iaciofano finishing second and third. Tom Slon took second in M50-54.
Congratulations to the team and best of
luck to Andrew Kalley this weekend as he sets out to defend his title at the
Stamford KIC It Triathlon in Stamford, CT. We’ll be cheering!

The Sports Center congratulates 36-year-old Jack Chen on
completing his first Ironman competition in Florida this past weekend. He
completed a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and topped it all off with a
26.2-mile run.
Jack Chen, blind since the age of 16, has competed in many
marathons and triathlons, but this was the longest and hardest race he has
attempted. Jack has spent hours in the Sports Center pool training for the swim
portion of the race.
“The conditions were tough – the current was pretty strong,
and there was a headwind for a solid 1/3 of the bike at least,” Jack says. “The
temperature at the start of the swim was 42 degrees and 48 degrees when the
bike leg began. In a word, it was cold!”
Jack is only the 13th blind person to ever
complete an Ironman race. Congratulations to Jack on finishing with a time of
13:45:32.
