Curriculum

Ice Skating Camp features two levels of instruction, Level I and Level II, that provide a fun and safe environment for campers to learn to skate. Campers who are learning to skate for the first time begin in Level I. Campers progress through the various stages of Level I, as they acquire new skills. Upon completion of Level I, skaters can either participate in Level II of Ice Skating Camp or join the Chelsea Piers Ice Hockey Camp. Skaters with previous skating instruction and who progress rapidly may be moved to Level II after being evaluated by the Ice Skating Camp Director.

Level I: The Level I curriculum follows the Learn to Skate USA's program and is designed to introduce skaters to the fundamentals of ice skating, including gliding, forward and backward stroking, snowplow stops, and swizzles. Additional skills, including outside and inside edges, forward and backward crossovers, three-turns, and mohawks, are introduced once the basics are mastered, preparing skaters to progress to either Level II or ice hockey camp.

Level II: The Level II curriculum focuses on the development of a skater's individual figure skating skills. Two daily on-ice clinics, practice ice time and a variety of off-ice training activities help campers improve their basic skating skills as well as learn jumps and spins.

Recreational Period / Cross-Training

In addition to their daily on and off-ice training, campers have the opportunity to experience many of the other sports available at Chelsea Piers, including gymnastics, rock climbing, field sports, basketball, bowling and more. Chelsea Piers provides equipment for all recreational activities.
