Sports Academy

Ages 5 - 12 • Field House

For the young athlete who enjoys a wide variety of sports, the Sports Academy is a dream come true. Basketball, soccer, baseball and volleyball headline the roster of sports offered at the Sports Academy, Manhattan's most exciting and comprehensive multi-sport camp. In addition to these popular sports, campers also have the opportunity to ice skate, bowl, rock climb and do gymnastics.

The goal of the Sports Academy is not only to offer young campers a place to play, but to teach them a wide range of skills that they will use for the rest of their lives. Through spirited play geared towards individual ability levels, campers learn multiple sports, gain self-confidence and acquire a love of sports to match their talents and interests. At the Sports Academy, we firmly believe that confidence is the key to success and, therefore, teach campers to feel good about sports and their own abilities. Campers must turn 5 by 6/1/17.

Curriculum

An age and level-appropriate curriculum is developed for each group to maximize learning, safety and fun, and to allow campers to achieve a high level of competency in all sports. Each day, campers develop and practice specific athletic skills and learn sportsmanship and team play through fun, spirited activities. Instructors promote social interaction and teach problem-solving skills on and off the field. Each afternoon, campers are given the opportunity to practice their newly acquired skills during structured games. In addition to traditional sports, campers enjoy flag football, floor hockey, ultimate frisbee, team building and cooperative games. Introducing these fresh activities gives campers even more opportunities to learn new sports. Throughout the summer, campers participate in exciting annual "Spirit Games."

Recreational Period / Cross-Training

In addition to their daily activities, campers experience many of the other sports available at Chelsea Piers, including bowling, gymnastics, ice skating and more. Chelsea Piers provides equipment for all recreational activities.

17-foot high, Super-fun Waterslide

On designated days, summer campers can cool off and enjoy the fun and excitement of our waterslide. Parents are notified when to send their child to camp with a bathing suit and towel.

Facilities

The Sports Academy is located on the sports side of the Field House, a multi-sport facility that features two indoor playing fields (for soccer, baseball, European team handball and more), two hardwood basketball/volleyball courts and four batting cages. Campers also have access to the other world-class facilities at Chelsea Piers, including the ice rinks, gymnastics center and bowling center.

Staff

Experienced, professional coaches lead daily training sessions in each sport. Mature and responsible counselors also provide supervision and support throughout the day. A low camper/instructor ratio ensures personal attention for each camper and maximizes safety.

There is a daily recreation period where campers participate in different activities at our incredible sports venues. Some of these activities include field sports, ice skating and bowling. A schedule of each activity is emailed to parents the week before camp.
Sports Academy campers are primarily grouped by age and ability. Our coaching staff then evaluates each camper's skill level in order to provide appropriate challenges as the camp progresses.
While we cannot guarantee any group requests to place your camper with another, we do our best to accommodate. Grouping requests must be submitted via email to camps@chelseapiers.com before 12 noon on the Friday prior to the week of camp. Age, gender, and skill level will always be taken into consideration.
While grouping campers with a specific staff member is very difficult due to many factors, we do our best to accommodate. Though each group has a primary coach and counselor, it is possible that campers may communicate and work with other staff members throughout camp.
